Linked to the last point is this one – stories can get in touch with our emotions. Even in number stories, this can be the case. When teaching addition EYFS we recommend using this first, then, now structure with the children. This structure allows children to tell mathematical stories and place these addition calculations into meaningful context. This resource contains a variety of different calculations and different stories all told visually through the first, then, now structure. Children can tell the story, using the language of first, then and now and complete the number sentence. Representing an addition calculation in this way encourages language and the understanding the they are adding more to a group of objects. For older children, and those very confident with strategies and types of math skills already described, then number stories can be made much more complex. There are many books that include the concept of one more. You might not even notice the fact unless you really thought about it. Drawing a picture often helps inspire reluctant writers to start writing. This is especially true of young children, who might need to see how the numbers interact before they actually write about them. Ask the students to imagine they received some fish for Christmas, for example, then lead them with a few questions relating to what type and color of fish. Have them draw a picture of the fish in their aquarium and write a number story based on the picture. Older students might be challenged by first creating an elaborate collage or mosaic out of torn paper or ceramic tiles and then being told to create a number story based on the artwork by choosing its shapes or colors. Activity: Make your own number bonds machine

Many children know what four add four is, but it can be different when it is four dogs and then four come to join them.

Hopefully, after children have been exposed to numbers stories, they will begin to see numbers in every day situations. This could be things like how to share objects between themselves and friends, how many objects they have gathered outside, or how many children are playing in the same area as them. Stories Are Memorable Even though these two examples use quite simple functions of addition and subtraction, the larger numbers involved require children to be clear in their methods of working out. Multiplying Number stories are sometimes called word problems. They’re descriptions of situations where the use of Maths can save the day. Instead of a question being written with +, -, ÷ or ×, it’s hidden within a story. Children have to work out which calculation they need to do before they can find the answer.

The next step is to share between three or four people. It is best to start without a remainder, although remainders will happen in play-based scenarios, and it is good for children to experience these.
