I will admit that I did not receive what I thought I would receive with this story, however. While it did begin as a fictionalised account of Gruoch’s life, it soon became more of a semi-feminist origin story for the character from Shakespeare’s play. The ending in particular wraps in such a way that it would lend itself quite naturally to being a prequel for all the events that play out in Macbeth. In this way, I thought it was well-planned. I was a bit disappointed that I did not receive a story that was more separate from the play but it was still enjoyable. I found Gruoch a strong and inspiring character. She was resilient and like a phoenix from the ashes, kept reinventing herself, time and time again. In a male dominated world, she used her brain and cunning skills to achieve her means. Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and frightening female characters. When we first see her, she is already plotting Duncan’s murder, and she is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. She seems fully aware of this and knows that she will have to push Macbeth into committing murder. At one point, she wishes that she were not a woman so that she could do it herself. Give me strength. Christianity arrived in Scotland before Scots did. Okay, that might a slight exaggeration, but they both arrived in the fifth century, OVER FIVE HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THIS NOVEL TOOK PLACE.

Emotional – when Malcolm tests his loyalty, he becomes very upset. He is devastated by the death of his family. He kills Macbeth in a rage of revenge.

I really enjoyed this book. This is not your standard retelling of another myth/folklore legend where you know what happens. There are some parallels to Shakespeare’s Macbeth and we meet some characters that appeared in the play, however, this is a totally original story, which I very much appreciated. Hark, she speaks. I will set down what comes from her, to satisfy my remembrance the more strongly."

Lady Macbethad tells the story of Gruoch before the infamous play and her pursuit in becoming Queen. The book introduces various characters you will know from the play, getting to meet Duncan and Macbethad (Macbeth) as young men, both growing up desiring Gruoch. Lady Macbeth manipulates her husband with remarkable effectiveness, overriding all his objections; when he hesitates to murder, she repeatedly questions his manhood until he feels that he must commit murder to prove himself. Lady Macbeth’s remarkable strength of will persists through the murder of the king—it is she who steadies her husband’s nerves immediately after the crime has been perpetrated. Ihr gesamter Charakter basierte auf dem Ziel, Königin zu werden, allerdings schien es nicht so, als ob sie sich jemals Gedanken darüber gemacht hätte, wie dies geschehen sollte. Und auch wenn ich ihren Wunsch, einfach so Königin, ohne Mann, zu werden, nachvollziehen konnte, hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass sie dann darüber nachgedacht hätte, wie sie dies erreichen könnte, anstatt immer wieder überrascht davon zu sein, dass manche Dinge in der Gesellschaft, in der sie lebt nicht so einfach funktionieren. Ich persönlich fand dieses Buch leider zeitweise eher anstrengend zu lesen. Dies lag hauptsächlich an zwei Gründen. Der größere war für mich definitiv der Schreibstil - dieser wirkte allgemein sehr distanziert. Zudem wurden nur sehr selten Szenen tatsächlich gezeigt. Meistens erzählte Gruoch lange Zeitspannen im Schnelldurchgang, ohne dass ich als Leserin ein wirkliches Gefühl für die Orte und Menschen um sie herum bekommen konnte. The novel is original fiction, based on source material regarding the period and person of Lady Macbeth. [10] In this book Isabelle Schuler looks into Lady Macbethad's origins. Her noble birth, her pagan roots, her love of country and family and her unceasing ambition to become the great queen she knew she could be. Obviously this is historical fiction so a lot is imagined but at least Ms Schuler gives us a more rounded character than the crazed psychopath that Will Shakespeare left us with.
