About this deal

This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). Starting a new life in a new country, a young boy feels lost and alone until he meets an old man who keeps racing pigeons. Nicola Davies' beautiful story an immigrant's tale with a powerful resonance in our troubled times is illustrated by an artist who makes the world anew with every picture. It's easy to see why King of the Sky was chosen as one of "The New York Time's Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2017! The friendship formed between the little boy and Mr Evans is a perfect example to me as to why an intergenerational project within school is a good idea.

The Times, Children's Book of the Week * "Nicola Davies tells a poignant tale of friendship and love, of displacement and loss, of hope and home.It was such a heart-warming story; the themes of friendship and loneliness are accessible not only for children but for people of all ages which makes the book really universal. This is an interesting and very relevant book but I'm not sure if it's one children will enjoy as much as adults. The author's next book, BAT LOVES THE NIGHT, is a tenderly written ode to a much-misunderstood flying mammal, the pipistrelle bat, while SURPRISING SHARKS--winner of a BOSTON GLOBE-HORN BOOK Honor Award--contains unexpected facts about another one of the planet's most infamous animals. Nicola Davies is an award-winning author whose many books for children include Ice Bear, Big Blue Whale and King of the Sky.

I enjoyed trying to copy your painting as a pencil drawing and received a special notice from the teacher taking me back 53 years. There are many layers to explore in the text, such as the boy’s ability to understand a different language through the soft speech of his new friend, the different foods he eats, and the growing friendship with the old man. Together they pin their hopes on a race across Europe and the special bird they believe can win it: King of the Sky.

The child becomes attached to a pigeon in which they seem to journey together to finally feel at home together. Re Del Cielo," the "King of the Sky," is sent to Rome by train to participate in his big race and fly back to Wales. The illustrations all look like pastel drawings and they depict the dark and gloomy atmosphere of the mining town (a place that didn't feel like home to the boy) very well. Nicola Davies’ beautiful story – an immigrant’s tale with a powerful resonance in our troubled times – is illustrated by an artist who makes the world anew with every picture.About the Author: Graduating with a degree in zoology, Nicola once worked as a presenter on the television programme The Really Wild Show. The book is in fact endorsed by Amnesty International because of its message of belonging and having a right to a home.
