The prologue alone drew me in and was absolutely tantalising. Once I had read that, I could not wait to get started. Jacob’s girlfriend, Rosie, is convinced the man she loves is suffering from stress. But when his moods turn on her, she begins to doubt herself – and she can only hide the bruises for so long.

When new evidence comes to light and the twenty-year old case is reopened, the four get together and it is only then that each one realises they have all been suffering. And they come to the conclusion that there is only one thing to do to save themselves and that is to own up to what they have done. Add to that the police questioning people without cautioning them or separating them from the person they harbour suspicions about and there's a whole lot of teeth grinding to be done if you are reader who likes realism. The Darkness Within ourselves is a psychological thriller book about trauma, mental health and guilt. I could see that the character Shane, was a nasty piece of work. He treated Rosie his girlfriend in the most abusive manner. Yes. It’s well written and crafted so that you get a strong overview of the church, its position, and its followers so you understand the power and control Naasón had. You’ll learn how it’s run on manipulation, guilt, and using a person’s faith against them.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, it was a great psychological thriller with a few drops of horror added in just the right places. I loved the well-developed, relatable characters, their relationships & the brilliant explorations of how childhood trauma, grief and guilt can shape an individual. I am super excited to see what novels Jessica Huntly releases in the future as this was an absolutely stunning debut. I think anyone who is interested in the elements I have mentioned above will love this book. Hearing these women share their experiences with such detail and distress is gut-wrenching. I felt such sorrow when they were expressing their conflicted feelings as they wanted to believe and defend their predator, and blamed themselves.The prose was descriptive and easy to follow, however I did feel at times that the reader was told and shown how a character felt, for example sometimes the characters are described as responding a certain way to a situation, and then their feelings are included where it was clear from their behaviour what their feelings would be. Explore disturbing corners of the human psyche. Delve into a dimension of nightmares, the occult and a tense psychological world created in classic Lovecraftian style.
There is multiple footage used of the leaders throughout — walking through confetti, being praised by thousands of followers, standing at their incredible and expensive-looking podiums, to then being detained and in the courtroom. The Darkness Within Ourselves follows a group of young teenagers who are the best of friends and have their whole lives ahead of them. Until one day they are playing a game of dares that goes horribly wrong and one of the boys ends up dead. Terrified of facing up to what has happened the group decides to bury their friend and cover up what really happened. After an investigation that uncovered zero clues the town ends up believing that the boy has run away. But that wasn't the end of it all. The remaining friends all drift apart over the next few years and each one ends up experiencing horrendous psychological problems and have some sort of ominous presence in their lives affecting them. 20 years later then find themselves having to face up to what has happened and the problems they have been having.Each is forced to relive the events of that day, and their part in it, in their own way when evidence of their friend’s death is finally unearthed and, by coming together, forced to confront their worst fears that are brought to a very tangible life through the author’s words. The extreme emotions of guilt, fear, depression, and anger are rendered in a near-physical form, causing each to suffer physically and mentally in their own way, and the way the author brings these elements to the forefront with an almost supernatural quality is commendable. The old man says that he is Volpehart's heir, and that he once tried to kill the monster to put an end to its evil. But he was too weak to even use the meteor spear against it, having been too long under its influence. Then a piece of evidence is found from that day and Amber and her former friends are forced to relive the events leading up to Kieran's death, learning truths along the way that they would rather not know about themselves. So excited this deal announcement is finally live! I have 30,000 words written on this project so far. Let me just say that I cannot wait for you all to meet the real Chrysantha.
From a parents point of view to have to deal with such changes, it really can’t be easy. Liz can see the person he is becoming but doesn’t want to believe it. No matter the type of person he is turning into, he’s still her son and that mothering instinct is very much there to protect him regardless. Sadly, as far as the good idea goes, I wasn’t able to truly appreciate the book. Yes, it delivers on humanly darkness. Yes, it has many conflicts that create complex settings for characters to deal with and yes, everything ties in together nicely…I adore Cathy Glass books and have done for many years, so, when I saw she was releasing a psychological thriller totally unlike the books she writes and using the pen name Lisa Stone, I just hadto read it. The story would have benefited greatly had we gotten to meet Jacob before his heart transplant. I wanted to see what kind of person he was before he turned mean, instead of being told by the narrator. It would have been more effective to see him as a loving, doting son and boyfriend, and then to see how drastically he transformed after the surgery.
