About this deal

a ROSE was the film’s central symbol, conceived prior to the release of any Violator-related artwork, the coincidence being purely happenstance!

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. The touring and media schedule had worked, pushing the band towards the edges of its then cult status, as many of those in the mainstream media woke up and realised that another group of four young lads from Britain were causing a hell of a stir on college campuses. Recorded in England, Denmark and Italy between May and September 1989, Depeche Mode’s seventh studio album ‘Violator’ was a landmark record beloved by fans and universally regarded as the band’s creative highpoint. Corbijn's work with the Area creative agency for the 'Violator' project delivered iconic, integrated artwork, photography, videos and short films across the album, its singles, and tour design. There’s a lot of discussion about why ‘Personal Jesus’ was controversial, but they realised they had on their hands, a song that was not only really good, but it was going to cause a certain degree of controversy, not least in the US where all of a sudden, they’d been blown into the mainstream.

million copies following its release in March 1990, ‘Violator’ gave the cult British band – Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher and Alan Wilder – the critical acclaim they finally deserved. Everything came together at the same time, such as mainstream crossover, artwork, videos, the tour, and of course, the high quality of the production on Violator. This period in the band’s history also found them forging a deeply trusted and influential partnership with photographer and designer Anton Corbijn, often viewed as the fifth member of Depeche Mode at this time. We would have fiddled around with that sequence for a while, tweaking the filters and envelopes within the ARP until we arrived at that particularly hypnotic end result.

The buzz amongst fans following the releases of ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Enjoy The Silence’, coupled with a confidence in the Depeche camp knowing that the Violator album was clearly a massive step up in its creative output, showed there was the potential for something big – bigger than Pasadena and 101 – to happen. The adventurous, highly experimental approach that the band took for Violator recording sessions also yielded two of the band’s most recognisable and successful singles in Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence.

This period in the band's history also found them forging a deeply trusted and influential partnership with photographer and designer Anton Corbijn, often viewed as the fifth member of Depeche Mode at this time. Coincidentally, an early job in journalism was as a reporter in Essex, covering Depeche Mode's hometown of Basildon.

The book is written by Kevin May and David McElroy and will be published in September 2022, through Grosvenor House Publishing. Also, I recommend watching Vaughn George’s conversation with Pino Pischetola about the history of the Violator album in Milan.Kevin had written something for Almost Predictable Almost’s Violator month so he knew the album was a favourite of mine. They had created their own sound as a European electronic band with British sensibilities, and the up until that point, their music had been very electronic… yes there had been guitars before, but they were at a point where they were influenced by electronic dance music like house and techno so they were conscious of that. The blog focusses on Depeche Mode and is especially known for The Global Spirit Tour Project which saw David publish a fan-written review of all 130 concerts on Depeche Mode’s 2017/18 Global Spirit Tour, three of which were written by his co-author, Kevin. At various points this month we will share highlights from the book and even a few exclusives that you won't find in the book or anywhere else. Although best known for ‘Enjoy The Silence’, ‘Personal Jesus’, ‘Policy Of Truth’ and ‘World In My Eyes’, the album featured some of DEPECHE MODE’s best work.
