About this deal

The restoration project Apollo Remastered brings out new details and shows the missions as experienced by the astronauts for the first time - it’s a voluminous coffee table book that offers the reader a mesmerizing vision of the bygone moon landing era. The Apollo Remastered prints, now available to purchase, are the very same quality prints exhibited at some of the world’s finest museums and galleries.

The results are stunning: if some pictures are simply better versions of already great and world-famous images (see below AS11-40-5903), others are near miracles of photographic processing, revealing for the first time details and nuances hidden for fifty years (one of the best examples is the book cover image, AS09-24-3665, a portrait of Apollo 9 Commander Jim McDivitt). This is as close as any of us will get to joining the Apollo astronauts on their historic missions to the moon—and it’s a lot closer than we ever thought possible. You can read about Apollo all you like, but it takes pictures like these to truly convey the wonder of journeying to the Moon; few space books have had such an emotional impact on me. The printing process captures nuanced detail no other print process can deliver, giving true continuous tones and an unparalleled depth of color, showing more shadow and highlight detail - perfect for presenting the huge dynamic range witnessed in space. I once asked my Great-Grandmother what she thought of the moon landing and she said it was astonishing, not simply because we beat the Russians, but because when she was born in 1891, unless you had wealth and could afford a horse and carriage, you walked everywhere; that's how you got around. All colors are contained within the emulsion layers and as such this is one of the most archival forms of printing photographs available.

It really is amazing what Andy is doing, it makes it look like it happened yesterday and now we're getting to see what things really looked like, versus what we thought they looked like - almost like going from black and white to color! Details about each of the key missions as well as the key occurrences about each of the missions have been well-documented and thoughtfully presented.Andy Saunders' remastered images are so clear and real that they are the next best thing to being there . Apollo Remastered by Andy Saunders is a wonder - the reproduction of the photographs taken over 50 years ago is truly amazing. The back matter includes information about the development of space photography, photographic equipment, the restoration process, a list of acronyms, and a list of internet sites with more information. Until then, these images are probably the best images available that show what it was like to travel through space and to walk and explore on the moon. Young Americans today simply don't appreciate what was accomplished in the 1960s, and, indeed, in the 20th century.

Several friends, who have no interest in the Apollo programme, have also commented on the quality of the book. You know, when you get back, you're going to be a national hero, but those photographs, if you get great photos, they'll live forever. Zdjęcia wyskakują wręcz ze stron i trudno sobie wyobrazić, jak wiele pracy i umiejętności kosztowało ich przygotowanie. It's hard to believe the detail that Andy has pulled out of the old Apollo film, especially the underexposed shots like the one I took of Jim McDivitt that he’s used on the cover of this incredible book. This is a beautiful and beautifully-made book that casts the moon as the ethereal and special place it is rather than just 'desolate'. Followed by a concise review of space photography; the equipment and operation; the photographic objectives and execution; the scans, image processing and restoration.

If I had one small criticism it's that the captions under the photos are in varying shades of grey on black paper, making it quite hard to read: I had to keep tilting the book to get the light in the right place. The information along with each photograph also helps tell the story of the program in such an immersive way. In Mission Control, imagination pieced together grainy television images, crew voice reports and the flight plan, to portray mission events. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I remember looking outside at the night sky and looking at the moon thinking that men are walking on the moon. And who am I to disagree with one of the only twelve humans to actually have an informed opinion on the subject?
