About this deal

There’s enough choice to be actively influencing your chances of winning, but an element of luck that means you won’t beat yourself up if you lose. To begin the game you must first decide upon an Architect, who will take one set of tiles, find the tile labelled 1 and set it aside, remove 5 other tiles from their set at random, shuffle them and place the remaining tiles in a face-down stack. This phase is only triggered when the tile drawn by the Architect has a number on a light background . If you have no half-circles in this area — that is, the area is completely enclosed — then you score 2 points for each cookie in that area.

The mechanics are simple enough to teach a new player in a matter of minutes, yet it still has enough depth to keep seasoned gamers happy. Example: In this example, the Tree token in the Closed L-shaped Pink Zone scores 8 victory points (4x2), because it has 4 Full- Runes.

Runes aren’t actually worth ANYTHING unless a tree of the same colour as the floor of the forest is growing within that space. If a Tree token is in a Closed Zone, it scores victory points equal to twice the number of Full-Runes in that Zone.

If you manage to fully enclose a section of leaves with a monument you earn two points per rune instead. You end up with such a nice little forest scene as well, which is pleasant; I like tile-laying games a lot because they leave me with that sense of progression, and I think Legendary Forests is no slouch in that department. Legendary Forests is a new board game coming to us from Japanese developer Toshiki Sato, illustrator Biboun, and published by Iello.Play continues until the architect has drawn their last tile and everyone has placed it in their own forest. The Architect will draw a tile from the top of their deck and read out its number to all other players.

At the end of the game I looked at each person’s forest to see how different they were even though we were all playing the same tile each round. For reference, this went on the shelf with Azul, Century: Golem, Space Base, Spirits of the Forest and Kingdomino as some current popular filler games.

The Architect should remove 5 tiles from the stack and place them out of play without looking at them. After the construction round, the token moves to the left with the next player starting the next construction round. That said, it’s not that big of a deal, so I don’t really have a problem with increasing the player count. You score by placing little trees on zones and hoping you can close them out before the end of the game.

A more cut-throat player might even use the tree tokens near the end of the game to keep another player from getting points. But if there is a legal place to play it, it must be placed there, even if the player prefers not to. The game ends after everyone has placed their twenty tiles, then players score points based on the areas where they have monuments. If you’re a fan of the Carcassonne series, this is a perfect intro-level game for the kids as you work them up to more difficult titles! tiles (5 sets numbered 1 through 25) depicting half runes along the edges along with a mix of grass, maple leaves, golden ginkgo leaves and cherry blossoms.
