About this deal

Mishra is a 5/4 human artificer for five mana that makes a token copy of a noncreature artifact you control every turn, except it's a 4/4 creature with haste named Mishra's Warform you have to sacrifice at end of turn. This is useful to get more mileage out of value artifacts and it doesn't hurt to run a decent sized creature you were going to lose anyway into your opponent's board. The ability had some interesting applications and makes some previously underwhelming cards worth playing, but at five mana I find myself wanting just a little more from this commander.

The highest impact upgrade that you can include for its price point is probably Mindslaver. It’s important to note that this card will create game states that could annoy players at your table, so use it with discretion. There are 63 retro artifacts: 18 uncommons, 30 rares, and 15 mythic rares. Each Set and Draft Booster contains a retro artifact . Collector Boosters contain retro artifacts as well—you can read below for the full product details. Schematic Artifacts This is a pretty well-oiled machine out of the box. But that doesn’t mean we can’t give a bit of a tune up. Upgradesgraveyard recursion; Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Silas Renn, Seeker Adept, Geth, Lord of the Vault, Trading Post, Wondrous Crucible The ratios looks great aside: the card draw is high but I was being pretty generous on what I counted and basically all of it is incremental draw. There's some really tantalizing inclusions here, such as Spine of Ish Sah which looks amazing when paired with Smelting Vat, or the new Blast-Furnace Hellkite which looks fun. There's also some other cards that fit the theme and get the job done but are overcosted, such as Hellkite Igniter (nostalgic but we can do better).

The third effect is truly quite powerful. At the beginning of your end step, you get a Construct token, which is as big as the number of your artifact creatures.

Playing the Deck

The Brothers' War contains 101 commons, 80 uncommons, 63 rares, and 23 mythic rares. Three of those rares and three of those mythic rares are double-faced meld cards. The Brothers' War also contains 10 basic lands and 10 full-art mech basic lands. Retro Artifacts There's too many combos to list, but I love both Nexus and Heart the most here because they're excellent cards by themselves and just so happen to win the game if we set up the combo.

Also, Ashnod doesn’t say construct anywhere on the card, and I indicate that Mishra is the recommended commander. However, Ashnod might ultimately be more useful, since some of these constructs have sacrifice triggers. Either way, I don’t recommend building this tribe. If you do, though, here are some interesting constructs: Non-foil retro or schematic artifacts: Each Collector Booster contains 1 retro artifact and 1 schematic artifact, one of which will be rare or mythic rare. There are a lot of artifacts that sacrifice permanents for an effect. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of them that create mana as a result of this. Ashnod can’t copy those abilities, because if the ability produces mana, it counts as a mana ability. However, here are a few artifacts that do something cool without making mana: Other vehicles normally have more power and toughness than they would if Mishra made of 4/4 copy of them. I left out most of these cards. You can include as many as you want, but the smaller vehicles benefit the most from Mishra, since they are usually balanced around having the power and toughness printed on the card. This is a pretty simple swap. We’re taking out some of our worst lands and putting in better ones. Academy ruins is the clear MVP here, allowing us endless recursion possibilities. You can go much further with upgrading the land base, but these are the first three substitutions I’d make. There is another interesting ability from this set that utilizes delayed triggers to balance cards. That ability is unearth, and it exiles the creature at the end of the turn. With Obeka-style effects, though, you can keep your unearthed creatures (or artifacts) forever. Here is a list of cards that have unearth: mana;37lands and Sol Ring, Wayfarer's Bauble, Arcane Signet, Dimir Signet, Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone, Rakdos Signet, Commander's Sphere, Cursed Mirror, Hedron Archive, Machine God's Effigy, Thran Dynamo, Dreamstone Hedron Another card we have that likes all those high-mana value artifacts is Glint Raker. Coming down as an early threat, its power scales with whatever non-creature artifacts you can get out. And it then rewards you by finding more artifacts whenever it hits, which is the real powerhouse ability of the card. Pitiless Plunderer, Revel in Riches, Ruthless Technomancer - It’s hard to imagine a game of EDH nowadays where people aren’t utilizing Treasures to their advantage. We can’t fault people for slotting these cards as upgrades - staples are staples for a reason - but when trying to make changes to stay within the lowest power level we have on our server, including several best in slot considerations is likely not the way to go.
