About this deal

The fit is excellent length and width wise, with a roomier, more foot shaped toe box than is typical of American heritage and work boots. I have enough room length wise but the top portion of the toe box is too close to the top of my foot and it is pushing into my big toe quite badly. Having worn hybrid boots (part leather, part synthetic) for the last couple of years, putting on a full-grain leather boot feels quite “abrupt”. I have used and abused my boots for a few years of seasons now and still happy to walk to cross ankle high (or above) streams without fear of getting wet feet.

I’ve worn them in snow with heavy socks and the traction was good but the lack of insulation convinced me to switch to my winter boots after a half day. If the upper is in good condition get the Yellow pages out and get in touch with your nearest cobblers. He is a qualified mountain guide, a keen rock climber and has a "thing" for technical footwear and backpacks. This is not a light boot, but to paraphrase a line by “Boris The Blade” from the movie Snatch, the reliability is in the weight. For over 30 years, the Jim Green Razorback has been the choice of South Africa’s’ safari lodges and outdoor enthusiast. My complaint has less to do with the feel of the boots and more in the quality control or lack there of and how the boots where shapes.

The Jim Green Razorback boot is inspired by Africa, designed to take on the daily outdoor and work challenges that come with the harsh terrain. South African footwear manufacturer, Jim Green, makers of the rugged, no-nonsense Razorbacks, have a second hiking boot in their line-up: The Monster Waterproof Boot. Given the durability and quality of the Jim Green upper, most people find they wear the sole away numerous times before the upper eventually gives way.I read that some of the other Reviewers needed to do a break-in; some of them for longer periods than others. last pair of brasher boots i had lasted 8 years and they got a lot of abuse still have them now but in retirement as the sole is very worn and leather has a few cuts in it. It took about a week of careful lacing and occasional readjustment to get the tongue to sit right, which is pretty much on par with other all leather hikers and mountaineering boots I have owned in the past. They are very high quality leather, full grain I believe, and are good for applications in uneven terrain.

The quality and construction is, honestly, on par with them and I might even say better (I had bad quality control issues with 2/3 of those Red Wings such as bad stitchings, missmatch between the lasts and sizing, etc). Reading this thread and talking about boot cleaning gave be inspiration to go clean/treat mine as it is overdue. While it looks very wide to the wearer looking down at them while on, observers do not really notice the wideness. I crawl around on my concrete driveway repairing my truck, my wife’s truck and our travel trailer, scuffing all sides of these boots. These changes are: (1) Use leather for the footbed, (2) Delete the insole or include a higher quality one (my insole was flat at the 40 mile mark), and (3) Install an additional lace eyelet by the toes.

To the best of my knowledge the creasing/grain break could just be an issue with my pair, but ultimately it’s a non-issue for me- I bought these to be work boots and hikers so I don’t expect them to be pretty anyway. Out of the box, plus the orthotics, these are some of the most comfortable boots I’ve worn and required almost no breaking in. It is a wider boot, particularly in the toe box compared to normal D width, but that room is part of what adds to the comfort. Fit pretty true to size, though I’m finding the Vellies and African Ranger boots fit differently from the Razorbacks.

Think carefully about whether you really need this product, because we want you to wear them for a long time. If you are looking for a rugged outdoor or general purpose boot, just get them, dont even think about it. With the future of our wilderness areas in the hands of those with boots on the ground, Jim Green Footwear and The Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA) have come together to make sure this issue is addressed. The shoes look great in person and I paid 147 euro’s in total for the shoes, some extra insoles, transport and VAT.I believe the break in period is different for everyone for me I felt it most in the heel area but nothing too bad. But combined with the initial treatments of saddle soap, allowing the 'soap' to first fill the creases, seams and sole to leather seams protecting the 'glue' then later applications of pure neatsfoot oil does nothing but good. From our cushioned PROFLY™ dual density midsole to our J-Frame™ outer sole with Active Foot Frame technology, our running shoes are without parallel; pushing your performance further and farther than you’ve ever been before.
