About this deal

I’ve got three ex-wives to support,” Tom interrupts. “My daughter’s in her second year at Berkeley. I need this job, man.” To survive, the group will have to revisit the nightmares of their childhoods and confront their shared past—a past that holds the secret to why someone wants them dead. Sorry, y’all, I overslept,” Donnie says, opening his guitar case and slinging the strap over his shoulder. Though the trauma of their childhood has never left them, each went on to live accomplished—if troubled—lives. They haven’t seen one another since they were teens but now are reunited for a single haunting reason: someone is trying to kill them. I listened to the audiobook and would recommend that format. The narration was fabulous and kept me 100%-focused the whole way through.

From Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Wood, a battlefield view of moral injury, the signature wound of America's 21st century wars. Moral injury refers to situations whereby an individual transgresses their sense of morality, ethics or values, to achieve a real or perceived necessity, but which ultimately elicits in a profound sense of ambivalence, guilt and shame in it’s aftermath. Five kids did something bad 25 years ago! And now a sociopathic, young female assassin tries to hunt each of them. Correction: Siamese sociopath twins try to kill them! A small group of kids meet in at the very misnamed Savior House, a group home for teens without parents. The place is a house of horrors with bullying and inappropriate adult caretaking. And girls go missing, never to be seen again. I don’t know if the characters are really that likable but I was reading it for the suspense and mystery- what did they do when they were younger, who is hunting them now, and why?

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ Minotaur Books for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions. From Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Wood, a battlefield view of moral injury, the signature wound of America's 21st century wars. Twenty five years ago, Jenna, Donnie, and Nico were the best of friends, having forged a bond through the abuse and neglect they endured as residents of Savior House, a group home for parentless teens. When the home was shut down—after the disappearance of several kids—the three were split up. This distinction is helpful in differentiating the complex experience of combat veterans (and the like) from people who suffer other kinds of crisis, trauma and disaster.

I’m cutting right here not to give spoilers! We mostly read about the characters’ present: dangerous twins already killed Ben: powerful district judge, father of a little girl, righteous and smartest one of their circle! If you are like me, and you loved “Every Last Fear” 5 ⭐️ And “The Night Shift” 4 ⭐️, you probably auto-requested this book, like I did, without even reading the synopsis. Good morning,” Jenna says with exaggerated cheeriness that would give even Simon a run for his money. Of course I can play.” He climbs into his shirt and jeans flung on the floor. Grabbing the handle to his guitar case, he charges out of the cabin. Before he responds, Pixie pushes her small frame inside. She makes a face at the stench, looks around, and before Donnie can conceal the evidence sets her eyes on the empty bottle of Jägermeister. The razor blade and rolled dollar bill on the table. He’s never been so happy to see rats. Scurrying, dirty, disgusting varmints that will unquestionably tear his flesh down to the bone if he dies. But for now, they’re a welcome sight: They’re alive. There’s still oxygen. The story starts with some of the teens standing over a hole in the ground. Another bad thing has happened but this time who did the bad thing? Next we are meeting some of those teens as adults. And what adults they have become. Hugely successful in their chosen fields. It'd be hard to find a group of teens that could have soared to such heights except in a story such as this one.
