There is yet to be a formally agreed-upon definition for both door and wheel for the purpose of the experiment, meaning the … door … is still open for interpretation. This sort of unimportant debate has proven to be an essential component of social media culture. Unlike other internet discussions, such as that of the 2015 dress that will go down in infamy, this wheels vs. doors question doesn't rely on your personal perspective or how you physically see something — it's a matter of logic that would be nearly impossible to solve. Which, of course, scratches our brains in a new and interesting way, making us all vigorously curious about the inane question of whether the number of doors in the world is greater than the number of wheels.
The debate heated up on TikTok once people started using mathematics and calculations to figure out how many doors and wheels there were in the world, trying to settle the debate once and for all. On March 8th, TikToker koowaluh posted five, separate TikToks that chronologically attempted to find the answer through math. His part one video [9] received roughly 277,400 plays and 25,400 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). His "Final Calculations" video [10] received roughly 7,600 plays and over 600 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right). In it, he concluded that there were roughly 82.5 billion doors in the world and roughly 65.25 billion wheels, effectively proving that there were more doors. He stressed in the series of TikToks the importance of what constitutes a wheel, such as something like a door hinge or a gear not fitting that definition. TeamDoors’ argument is that there are many doors into different rooms in different buildings, as well as doors on closets, kitchen cabinets and even advent calendars. You see, everyone loves a good chat over whether there’s more of this and that, especially over Christmas – I believe some people call it an ‘argument’ while others refer to is as a ‘heated discussion’ and Jedi’s refer to it as ‘aggressive negotiations’– so what better than a game that provides a structure for these traditional tete a tetes that too often descend into fisticuffs? This whole wheels vs doors debate is throwing me for a loop. What is a wheel? What qualifies as a door? What if this is all a big ploy by the window industry? Do windows count as doors? Was it a hot topic? For sure. Was blood spilled? Almost certainly. Was it ever answered? (searches on [undesignated internet search engine]) Um… apparently not, but for a while it looked like wheels, until the great door boom of 2021… TeamWheels have pointed out how many objects have more than one wheel. For example, there are four wheels on a standard car, and two on bikes and wheelchairs. Ryan Nixon, who posted the original poll, did follow up a few days later to say "be careful what you tweet", insinuating he's likely seen more sides of this debate than he ever planned to. I have just discovered the debate on whether there are more wheels in the world vs more doors in the world.
Wheels did narrowly take out the win on that particular thread, beating doors 53.6 per cent to 46.4 per cent, but the internet has decided it's not quite done with the argument. I can never look at a wheel or a door the same. And the fact that we’ll never truly know the answer makes it worse.
