About this deal

When babies and toddlers are holding and playing with objects, say what they are doing for example: “You’ve got the ball” and “Shake the rattle.” Children learn and develop more from birth to 5 years old than at any other time in their lives. If children are at risk of falling behind the majority, the best time to help them to catch up and keep up is in the early years. Every child can make progress if they are given the right support. Towards their third birthday, can the child use around 300 words? These words include descriptive language. They include words for time (for example, ‘now’ and ‘later’), space (for example, ‘over there’) and function (for example, they can tell you a sponge is for washing). Although Development Matters 2020 Non-Statutory Curriculum Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage (New EYFS 2021) is not a statutory document, it can be a very useful tool for children’s learning and development because it gives examples of how practitioners can support in each of the 7 EYFS areas.

Take time and ‘tune in’ to the messages babies are giving you through their vocalisations, body language and gestures. Throughout the early years, if a child’s progress in any prime area of learning gives cause for concern, practitioners must discuss this with the child’s parents and/or carers and agree on how to support the child. Practitioners must consider whether a child may have a special educational need or disability which requires specialist support. They should link with, and help families to access, relevant services from other agencies as appropriate. What are the prime areas of learning in the EYFS? We have republished Development Matters. While it’s not compulsory, we recommend that you use it with the new statutory framework. The change The key person approach gives children a secure base of care and affection, together with supportive routines. That can help them to explore and play confidently. Educational programmes, referred to by some people as the ‘early years curriculum’, are the areas of learning and development which must shape the activities and experiences that children have in your early years setting, at all ages. Your setting should use the educational programmes to decide the approach to curriculum that is right for you.

Effective practitioners are responsive to children and babies. They notice when a baby looks towards them and gurgles and respond with pleasure. These Early Learning Goals EYFS posters are a fantastic way of displaying the EYFS ELG statements within your setting or staff room. These colourful posters show the areas of learning on separate sheets. You can use them in separate dedicated displays to share the EYFS ELG statements for each specific area of learning, or you can use them in a general display about the Early Years Goals.

Find a Scheme of Work

Numerical Patterns focuses on recognising and representing patterns as they count, being able to compare numbers and see differences. These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life. Without securing these critical skills outlined in this initial Prime Area of Learning in the EYFS, children will find it difficult to progress in the subsequent areas of development. Forming positive relationships and attachments, and being able to manage your own emotions are the foundations needed to ensure active, enthusiastic and secure learners that can develop and thrive. Where you can, give meaning to the baby’s gestures and pointing for example: “Oh, I see, you want the teddy.”

The early learning goals should not be used as a curriculum. They should be used as an assessment during the summer term of the reception year. They're a driving force behind helping children as they learn to form relationships, moderate emotions and thrive in their day-to-day life.
