About this deal

In a world still filled with superstitions, if you die during childbirth you become a vampiric ghost and i. There are some well-known names in the book, from Stephen Hawking to Frida Kahlo, but the difference here is the way their stories are told using the social model: the barriers described are societal and medical conditions are used simply for context. They fought through the misconceptions of others and created a fulfilling life for themselves while contributing greatly to the world.

Chronicling physical and mental disabilities of both historical and current figures, this book is sure to make students think twice before labelling others. Stand Up, Stand Out highlights the lives and achievements of 25 amazing people who decided to stand up to injustice and speak out about what they believed in. All of this knowledge is power for young people reading, particularly for disabled young people, being armed with an arsenal of capable people to look up to that they can identify with.the author could have easily left it out, leaving children wondering what the terms meant, but instead they are explained at the back, allowing the child to read and understand on their own. I got this as an ARC from NetGalley, but it's one I hope to add to my personal library, and I know I'll be requesting that my public library add a copy.

If there are any words in the book that you’re not sureabout, there is a glossary at the end to help.I finish reading by planning to throw a bunch of Molotov cocktails in Hollywood for generally just making a biopic of a white man, and having so many incredible stories out there that also deserve attention, such as Wanda Diaz-Merced, an astronomer who after losing the vision created a formula to be able to hear the stars and to be able to continue her work. Even though I was already familiar with some of these historical figures and celebrities, I had never heard of most of them, and I am glad that I had the chance to learn so much from this. My son is 7 and this might be a little difficult for him to read himself and some of the terms would be hard for him to understand, but I think older than that would definitely benefit from this book. Neither is wrong, or offensive, but it is importantto remember that people are disabled by society and do not need to be fixed.

The aim of this book is to introduce children to people who have disabilities but have managed to do amazing things. Highlighted in the book are 34 people who have proven that they are strong, worthy and rise to challenges. This book weaves together critical studies of Singaporean films, compelling personal reflections, and analysis of the contemporary socio-political discourse. Cerrie Burnell is an actress, singer, playwright, author and former television presenter for CBeebies (2009–2017). I read it to my 6 year old who has many of the ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ series and he enjoyed it as a natural, more detailed progression from those stories.I wouldn´t be mad if there would be another collection of disabled minds coming out sometime soon but until then I feel motivated to read up on some of the mentioned people. And we can work against that and change our cultures to be truly inclusive if we hear stories like these, gain better understanding of some of the cultural frameworks in which disabled folx grow up, and empower children to work to create more inclusive, accessible communities for everyone.
