About this deal

Everytime Magda or Russell would try to worm their ways back in, Nadine would sort them out and stand up for Ellie. Overall, it was not a very good read, and I'd only recommend it if you desperately wanted to complete the Girls series. All the characters are comical stereotypes of teenage boys and girls (The girls are very emotional and cry and fall out a lot and the boys only talk about sex) and at the end of the book - at the end of the SERIES - she gets back together with the guy who repeatedly tried to pressure her into sex, passed her work off as his own, emotionally abused her and then cheated on her with her best friend. The whole thing is just awful and I'm glad I read it at 35 not as a young impressionable girl because I'm not sure what messages I would have taken away from it but none of them would have been good! Ten-year-old British twins Ruby and Garnet take turns narrating this broad comedy, a winner of the Smarties Prize; PW described it as ""an unexceptional mix of familiar plot devices.

I think Ellie should have opted for choosing some new friends three books ago, it doesn’t bode well for her having people like that around her as a character. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Magda's lost her pet and is desperately upset (though the others didn't even know she had a hamster! I don’t think this gives young teenage girls a good idea of a health friendship and is very surprising from Jacqueline Wilson. A superb fourth instalment in the GIRLS series, following GIRLS IN LOVE, GIRLS UNDER PRESSURE and GIRLS OUT LATE. Just because he’s the first boy to show and interest in her doesn’t mean she should be willing to overlook anything.

I read this to complete two parts of a 2018 reading challenge: finish a book series and read a young adult book. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.

I did accidentally read a review that spoiled the whole book for me, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I think I would have.
