Bird Cottage, by Dutch author Eva Meijer, alternates between snapshots of Howard’s life – sometimes months, more often several years apart – and anecdotal studies of the birds that she lives among in her Sussex cottage.
As she grows older and spends less time with people (“there are always things that take precedence”), Len becomes increasingly eccentric. Meijer paints a beautiful picture of Len’s simple existence in the countryside; how she preferred the birds’ company to that of humans; how her home became more of an aviary than a house; how she took to task anyone who threatened her beloved birds.
Despite being one of the stars of the orchestra, Len finds it difficult to cope with unfettered city life, the gossip among musicians and her own insecurities, particularly about men, fuelled by her lover’s infidelity. I very much admired Meijer's interpretation of Len Howard, and would dearly like to learn more about her.
