About this deal

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we’ve spent hundreds of hours researching and testing over 200 stain remover products and laundry detergents to help you keep your laundry looking its best — even whites! In our most recent full-category test of stain removers, we tested 37 products to review the effectiveness, ease of use and overall value of each product. From grass stains to wine spills, we've put each product to the test to let you know which ones came out on top.

Remove the cap and push the tip firmly against the area you wish to test until a little amount of solution comes out. For those everyday stains that occur anywhere from the office to a restaurant, we love Tide To Go Instant Stain Remover. This compact and portable stain remover pen is effective at removing small stains, both fresh and set-in, caused by food, grass, ink, and oil. While the red wine and foundation stains needed a bit more work, our tester says “the grass, marker, and syrup were all totally removed.” Some stains are more difficult to remove than others. Flores says that blood, grass, ink, and wine are common stains that are very hard to remove. Certain stains, like bleach, are nearly impossible to remove. Remove the cap and press the tip of the pen onto the stain a few times for a brief second each time. Allow the pen to release a small amount of its solution. The solution should completely cover the stained area.

Tide PODS are a “3-in-1” laundry solution with the three components being: concentrated detergent, stain remover, and color protector. If the Tide to Go pen doesn't remove the stain completely, try a different pretreatment stain remover before you machine-wash or dry clean your outfit. Follow the instructions on your specific stain remover product, as they may differ depending on how they should be used. When the sodium carbonate peroxide (a.k.a. sodium percarbonate) is mixed with water, it becomes activated and creates a chemical reaction that releases oxygen. Those oxygen bubbles loosen the stain and separate it from the fabric. Once the solution covers the stain, gently scrub the stain with the tip of the brush. The tip contains microfibers that help absorb and pull out the stain. There’s nothing quite like the panic of watching a glob of foundation splat onto your favorite blouse when you’re getting ready for work or a night out. Makeup stains are tough to remove, and while we tested more than 30 stain-removing products, none of them entirely removed foundation stains from clothing. However, the Shout Advanced Stain Remover got pretty close.

A cleaning solvent that, like ethanol, helps keep the surfactants liquid so they can infiltrate and remove the stain from your clothes’ fibers. But it also one-ups ethanol by dissolving oily material from the stain itself and doesn’t evaporate into so much vapor as soon as it leaves the pen. To remove stains using this product, scoop the powder to the second line on the included scoop, and pour it into a gallon of water. Allow the garment to soak for one to six hours, depending on the size and type of stain. After soaking the stained fabric, launder your garment as you normally would. The Sparkling Fresh Scent and Lavender & Lily Scent detergents are the same besides their fragrance. The Sparkling Fresh Scent detergent smells like “flowers and citrus” while the Lavender and Lily smells like fresh spring flowers. Our testers loved how versatile and effective this product was at removing the toughest set-in stains, especially wine, makeup, and ink. While the powder formula can be a little messy to use, especially when mixing in a spray bottle, it’s definitely effective. The label recommends pre-soaking items in warm water before washing for best results, while our testers recommend a lengthy pre-treatment. “The longer you let the product set, the more it removes the stain,” says one tester.

Tide discontinued Tide OXI, which was their answer to OxiClean’s Versatile Stain Remover, and instead are focusing their efforts in the stain removing category on their Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover Pen. If you’ve ever gotten a coffee stain on your shirt before an important meeting, you know the importance of having a pen stain remover in your bag. It’s no surprise that the reliable Tide To Go Instant Stain Remover is the best pen stain remover because of its convenience and effectiveness.
