DS Jack Frost is working under his mentor and inspiration DI Bert Williams, and coping badly with his increasingly strained marriage.This combination of robots and zombie-like creatures was an interesting take that I hadn’t come across before. However, both Bunt and Frost end up getting captured by the evil John Lord that now runs the city, relying on his enslaved citizens. I will warn you, it is open-ended , which I know is a deal-breaker for some people, but some of my favorite stand-alones, such as Eleanor and Park and Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock held the same fate, but I loved those as well. It’s all about trusting the author to make a story as believable and verisimilar as possible – and I quickly lost my trust here. She ends up going to a local bar to forget her hellish birthday, but ends up very publicly trash talking the fae Seelie king. Before he offers her the deal, he also tells her right away that the Fae realm is dying and he needs to marry for the magic his future queen will give the land. However, every once in a while, an author off the beaten path will catch my attention and impress me.It was almost nice to see someone that didn’t give up hope, even though I don’t know how I would have reacted in her shoes.
