About this deal

Apart from that, the performance was excellent using our Windows platform in the office. No issues with lag in audio dialogs and movies which used to be a thing a few years ago on previous models. As of the writing of this, the SD card support is up to 64GB Micro SDXC with FAT32 formating, there is only one slot. This works quite well actually, there are no problems with recognizing it. Class 4 and above is recommended by me. Thank Thesycon company for working with us to work out the licensing plan for their latest and greatest! This review was written about two months after first receiving the X3. I was supposed to take only a month. If you hear nothing more out of me, Oyaide have probably...

The numbers do also suggest a significant step in dynamic range over the older X3ii’s numbers with an increase by up to 6db (107db versus 101db) on the line-out performance. Perhaps a validation for the dual DAC implementation. My assumption here is the power has been dropped a little to bring in a wider range of efficient IEMs that simply do not need a high level of power and prefer to focus instead on detail and dynamics. You can still control the mode of output via the settings menu and a small icon will tell you which mode is currently selected in the top bar on the screen. Micro USB This is also the first X3 generation with a built-in Bluetooth 4.1 capable module. Previous players were a bit cut off from the universe and had no connectivity. Today’s modern DAPs, even at the budget level now have some form of connectivity and this keeps FiiO up to speed in that respect. All New Design The mids are a bit more thin on the X3, they have good detail, but the more strainy/whiny sound they produce is less than desirable. This can add a bit of fatigue to the user, but the amount they are off by is not much. They have a slight upper mid spike of brightness at the very top of the range, but below that, the spike isn’t really there, and features a bit more subduing in the mid range. What they have done right: buttons in lieu of a douchey touchscreen, metal instead of plastic, standard ins and outs, is done well. Touch screens require good programming and layout knowledge - both items are Ancient Greek to audiophile companies. The level of pixelation from the new OS on the X3iii screen is similar to the X1ii’s performance with slightly inferior anti-aliasing to the 2nd gen HiBy system and glass. I have seen this on a few Linux powers software systems before and is usually related more to the font choice which has stayed the same for both DAPs. Memory Single Slot I actually wish a lot more DAPs and sources would sound like that. I subjectively enjoy that type of sound field in my preferred music listening. I don’t like harshness. Those who enjoy a more simplified and enjoyably soft approach to it all will really feel at home with the X3II. The Gadgeteer's Bill Henderson wrote that the X3 supports more music formats and higher resolutions than iPod. However, he noted that the front face of the X3 "is a confusing array of buttons" and that the screen's resolution is low, although readable. He praised FiiO for releasing software updates that improve the X3's various aspects, as well as the support for external storage. [8] Usually, I have some type of gripe on where certain folders are left and stored. But, in this case, I really have nothing negative to say. Great job, Xduoo. The player looks and feels fantastic in setup. ProGuard Custom Fleximonitors 2: The X3 has a bit more spacious sound than the Nova, but is also more mid-forward. Bass presence is close, with the Nova having slightly less bass presence. The presentation is clearer than the DX50 for a better overall sound. 6/10

However, FiiO has been a bit clever and added USB OTG support via firmware to the new X3 Gen 2, meaning you can add extra memory via flash drives much like Ibasso and the DX series. Given the ever-falling price of memory cards once you hit your micro SD card size limit with the X3 Gen 2 an extra OTG small flash drive might just be a very useful alternative. When I spoke to James, one of the Co-owners of FiiO on our visit to their HQ in Nov 2017 he made special mention of the X3 DAP legacy, calling it one of their key “growth” products. FiiO first tested this OS on the X1 Gen 2 last year and for me, it was hit and miss. I understand it was designed to mimic the features of the old UCOS setup, however, it was very slow and ponderous. The X3iii is a good deal faster though by modern standards and FiiO have expanded the OS to deliver a much more feature-rich experience than before. New Features Whilst it still has some core features like the scroll wheel system the X3 Mark III is being pitched by FiiO as a lighter, thinner and much better handling DAP than the previous generations.Disclosure: In the end, I went with the Kitchen Aid mixer. I want something to perform well, to last- and to look good in my kitchen. That’s probably a pretty good look my approach to reviewing audio devices. Output power is reasonable though not outstanding and is more suited to powering IEMs and efficient headphones than anything more demanding. In unbalanced, you will get≥ 160 mW (32 Ω/THD+N<1%) and balanced at a similar weighting will get you≥ 190 mW. What I do appreciate is the quality of the screen, the UI navigation and the responsiveness of the UI. Again not quite AK quality screen, but it’s a good quality screen and I like how the UI is quite responsive and snappy. The UI graphics is pretty good as well and though the positioning of the buttons can be made to be more intuitive (+ shaped, for instance), overall I’d give an 8/10 for the UI.

Unlike the X1, you can use the X3 Gen 2 as a DAC in much the same way as you could use the original X3 as a DAC via the USB and either a line signal out or a Coaxial line out depending on your setup or simply direct to the headphone out. Jog Wheel

I really enjoy the UI quite a lot. It has been a very long time since I actually felt comfortable navigating the menu of a non-touchscreen portable player such as this. What is there is very user-friendly and extremely well set-up. Custom Art Music One: The X3 exerts good control of the Music One for tight, well defined bass and a cleaner sound across the spectrum than the Clip+. Reverberant bass comes across as more prominent from the Clip+ since the control isn’t as good, and the driver keeps moving where the X3 keeps the presentation cleaner. The X3 is slightly smoother than the DX50, but less revealing and with less bass. Bass quality between the X3 and DX50 is similar. 6/10 Overall, the build quality of the X3, fits the device. It’s lightweight and of enough quality for a dap of this price. It allows for maneuverability and portability without being hunkered down by a paper weight and without raising costs. The lower tolerances inside it do make for some squeaks if you press it which is a shame.
