Carbon monoxide alarms in rooms with sloped ceilings should be located at the high side of the room. The advice below is purely provided for ‘best practice’ and should not be used independently. Please note, these alarms are not suitable for homes in Scotland under the new Fire & CO regulations. These alarms fall under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations (WEEE). The directive requires producers of Electronic Equipment to join a WEEE compliance scheme and contribute to the cost of recycling Waste Electronic Equipment that is collected at local recycling centres and other routes. Under the extended Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015, from October 1st 2022, a carbon monoxide alarm will be required in all rooms where there is a fixed combustion appliance – such as gas boilers or gas fires – once the compliance date is announced. However, gas cookers are excluded from the updated regulation. Ideally, an alarm should be installed in every room containing a fuel-burning appliance and every sleeping room. Additional alarms may be installed to ensure that adequate warning is given for occupants in other rooms, in which they spend considerable time whilst awake and from which they may not be able to hear an alarm in another part of the property.
