About this deal

From the Saxons to the Windsors, Britain's royal lineage is brought to life in the pages of this visual guide. I’m trying to read a lot more straight history and kings and queens of England was a big hole in my knowledge. The chapters are presented with a brief character analysis, a timeline of events, illustrations of people places and events, reflective observations from contemporaries and sections devoted to highlights of the ruler’s life. The Lives of the Kings and Queens of England provides brief biographical sketches of nine centuries worth of English monarchs. The structure is that of a directory or quick-reference guide while the content is exactly what it claims to be: a listing of English monarchs with brief bios (generally 2-4 pages for each).

This was a little more in depth than The Tudor Treasury, which was good but sometimes it was a bit dense, but maybe that's just me! My ignorance was only mildly assuaged, but there was a nice sense of continuity over the centuries (with only gap the effective rule of Oliver Cromwell). The ideal history book for history buffs of all ages, whether you are or know of a fan of royal history, or looking for the perfect gift book for history students - Kings and Queens of England and Scotland is your go-to guide for a complete history of the monarchy. Brenda Ralph Lewis has written more than 100 books and hundreds of magazine articles, as well as radio and television documentaries, on subjects including history (both ancient and modern), myth and legend, animal and insect life, archaeology and genealogy. Information-wise, the book is sufficient, but readers who already have a base familiarity with British monarchial history may be disappointed.

Crofton also states too many myths and propaganda pieces as though they are factual plus much of “Kings and Queens of England” is dated (such as the section on Richard III).

Long did she reign and peacefully may she rest: this beautiful and thoughtful tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates the life of a remarkable woman whose 70 years on the throne made her the longest-reigning monarch in British History. British Kings and Queens takes an overall look at the British monarchy, explaining what a monarchy is, how it works and who gets to sit on the throne. There are lots of funny anecdotes like how William I (The Conqueror) was so fat he couldn't fit in his coffin.
