About this deal

Using the dosing funnel is a simple and convenient process that can help achieve precision in coffee-making. First, attach the funnel to your portafilter by twisting it on. Place the portafilter on your coffee machine's built-in grinder and trigger the grinder button with your portafilter. The grounds will flow directly into the portafilter without any spillage, thanks to the funnel's design. The Breville Barista Max comes with a one-year manufacturer's guarantee – after this, you're liable for any repair bill. This is a shame, in my humble opinion, because it potentially dramatically reduces the value for money that this machine delivers. The impeller on the Barista Max + does concern me a bit, it just doesn't look very substantial & durable. I may be wrong, I know that looks can be deceiving, you probably wouldn't look at me and think that I was capable of doing 100, one-armed press-ups, would you?

While these features do look spookily like the convenient features found on the Sage machines, I think in some ways they've actually done a better job with a couple of these than Sage has. Hopefully, I've given you enough of a warts ‘n all description of this machine to paint a fairly realistic picture for you, which you can use to determine whether or not this might be the espresso machine for you. I'd definitely recommend the extended warranty from Currys, as it only has a 1 year manufacturer's guarantee. The main reason for writing this post is just to make it very clear to anyone considering buying any of the Breville Barista Max range, that these machines are not the same as the Sage Barista range. Once that's out of the way, I'll move on to answering the question, are they any good – given the fact that they're substantially cheaper. What would be “good to know” would be how many bars of pressure the overpressure valve is restricting the pressure to?

Wait, I don't even own a cap – I'll buy one, and then I'll doff it. Hmm, how the chuff do you doff a cap? Anyway… There's a common misconception, actually, among speciality coffee folk, that the domestic espresso machines listed as “15 bars” don't have an overpressure valve, and this is a misconception I previously shared. The marketing blurb states “Tap & Go on-demand coffee grinder”– and this is quite misleading, in fact, it's just chuffing wrong! Please keep your dosing funnel cool, away from any source of heat, ie. under the sun, or on top of your coffee machine, dishwasher, etc.🚫 This would be the owner of the Breville brand name in the UK, a firm called Newell Brands, an American company that owns several other brands including Yankee Candle & Mr. Coffee – and, importantly, the coffee machine brand Sunbeam.

As you'll see if you watch my video above, overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the Breville Barista Max +. It's a cheap machine, for what it is, it doesn't look or feel anywhere near as cheap as I expected, and I actually found myself being far more impressed with this machine than I thought I would be, so I have to doff my cap to them. We specifically designed the dosing ring with the home barista in mind. Due to the curvature in the dosing ring, it has a nice grip to easily place it on your portafilter and of course to take it off.

This machine comes only with standard baskets – and this is a good thing if you consider yourself the home barista type. If you're definitely not a home barista and have no intention of becoming one, and you thought this machine was a bean to cup machine, then just see the “standard baskets” section below in the not so good stuff to see why this may be an issue for you. I was expecting to find the Barista Max Plus to be a bit rough around the edges, or as one person commented “cheap and nasty”– but in my humble opinion, it's not rough around the edges at all, and I certainly didn't find it to be cheap and nasty. To me, it looks and feels really good for the money. Yes, it's all plastic on the outside, and this will be one of the ways they've brought the manufacturing cost down, but overall I'm quite impressed by the look and feel of this machine given the very low cost. The not so good stuff Firstly to run through the four machines in this range. Well, there are actually three in the Barista Max range, and the Barista Mini is clearly a doppelganger of the Sage duo temp pro. The review is purely on the Barista Max +, but I'll briefly mention the full range: Breville Barista Mini VCF125 Well OK, looks aren't always deceiving, I can do approximately zero one-armed press-ups, but they can be, so I may be wrong about this, it may be absolutely fine, but using the old “if it seems too good to be true…” wisdom, it would seem too good to be true, to me, to think that this machine at this price, is going to come without its issues when it comes to durability, and I suspect that the weakest link in the long term, maybe this impeller. To be perfectly honest, I think only five of the 10 internal adjustments are actually valid on the integrated grinder machines from Sage/Breville, and I would usually adjust the Sage Barista range to the four or five settings internally, but still, you have a number of opportunities to tweak things finer as the burrs wear over the years, and you don't have this with the Breville Barista Max +.While the Sage machines do, as I'll explain, score more points in the areas that I believe really matter, the Breville machine does come close in all but 2 of these areas, so there's no doubt at all that this machine from Breville offers very good value for money. These kinds of machines are similar to bean to cup machines, in that they don't quite require the home barista skill to get decent results from a standard basket machine, but on the flip side, they limit the espresso quality, as the basket has all the control. We chose to make the ring out of aluminum. This makes the dosing ring lightweight but also incredibly solid. So, the ring will last you a very long time! The light weight makes that ‘snap’ of the magnets possible, which just feels good every time you use it. When you’re ready to tamp, the dosing ring is of course easy to lift off the portafilter. As I mentioned earlier, the fact that this machine comes with standard baskets is a great thing if you're wanting to get into the home barista hobby, but if you're not interested in that, then the fact that this machine only comes with standard baskets is possibly not a great thing. For anyone who's not seen the Sage coffee machines in question, here they are, decide for yourself if there are any similarities here:
